Tips on Customising Your Clothes

SPONSORED POST

Customising clothes is a great way to freshen up dresses, skirts and even trousers that have been languishing unloved at the back of your wardrobe. Or if you are confident, you can adapt, personalise that newly acquired garment, to make 100% sure it is exclusive to you and no-one else. That’s not all, in these austere times, you may be able to save yourself a bit of money by putting off buying a new outfit and just adapting some of your existing gear!

I suggest you start off with something simple, and perhaps not too well-liked, so that if you don’t like the end results, you haven’t ruined your favourite dress! You don’t have to be a seamstress, and you can start off with fabric paints, a bit of lace, buttons, ribbons and even bows.

Try fabric flowers as an addition to refresh a dress or cardigan. You can buy them ready-made or make them yourself. I won’t give you detailed instructions on how to create fabric flowers; there are plenty of tutorials on the internet, but they can look really arresting. You only need a pen, card, scissors, a candle (to singe the edges and make them, a silky synthetic fabric, and needle and thread with or glue to assemble the petals, plus a button to sew the finished flower to your clothing.
Hems of dresses and skirts are prime targets for a revamp. Go for lace or matching chiffon/mesh just like Jill Stuart. If used tastefully, it will bring an older dull item of clothing alive. Why not try a bright red satin slash on the hem? Lace and similar fabrics on the hem can also add an inch or two to the length of the dress. You’ll need a sewing machine to do the lace properly, but it can really transform an older skirt or dress.

If you have a strapless dress that you want to make more comfortable to wear, why not go for removable straps? You can do that by having some Velcro attached. Attach the hook side of peel-and-stick Velcro to the outside ends of each strap and the loop side of the Velcro to inside of the dress.

Finally we must not forget the easiest thing of all…dye. The instructions are all on the dye, but I’d say always use double the amount if you want to make sure the colour is strong. If you really are into the flower-power revival then go for tie-dye, or some other form of restriction to the fabric. In this way you can get some great effects- but just remember to give your washing machine a thorough rinse after using it to dye- at least two hot wash cycles to remove all the traces of dye. Check this amazing article on how to dye your clothes for more tips!

Toast The Holidays With A “Crantini”

It’s obvious to me that seasonal cranberries and the popular martini are a marriage made in cocktail heaven. The Cranberry Martini, or Crantini, makes holiday gatherings special. Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, everyone should be toasting with them instead of the same old Bloody Marys and Appletinis.

The Cranberry Martini, a.k.a. Crantini, is a simple variation of a Cosmopolitan, which combines vodka, cranberry juice, triple sec and lime juice. The Cranberry Martini recipe leaves out the last two ingredients.

Ingredients Per Cocktail
  •  2 ounces vodka or gin
  •  1/2 to 1 ounce vermouth (optional)
  • 1/2 ounce cranberry liqueur or 2 ounces cranberry juice
  •   Fresh, frozen or dried cranberries for garnish

Pour the first three ingredients into a cocktail shaker or mixing glass with 2 ice cubes. Shake for 10 seconds and strain into a chilled martini glass.  Float 3 cranberries for garnish.

Or you can make your own Cranberry Infused Vodka. There are lots of recipes on the world wide web, but this one is my favorite. And it doesn’t hurt that it’s super easy.

Cranberry Infused Vodka Recipe

1 pound of fresh cranberries
1 bottle Vodka (750 ml)
  • Place cranberries in food processor and pulse until coarsely chopped.
  • Combine vodka & cranberries. Cover and let stand for 2 weeks.
  • Strain off the solids with a fine mesh sieve. Discard solids.
  • Transfer into sterile, airtight container and store in refrigerator.

This could make a great DIY gift if given in a fancy bottle!

Cheers!

Nasty Gals Do It Better

Sorry about the photo heavy post, I went a bit cray. I have been lusting over this Shown To Scale dress for ages and ages. Then I saw Nasty Gal had a sale with 20% off all their dresses and I was in there like swimwear. I paired it with my favourite black flatforms and a matching red lipstick. I'm hoping to wear this all christmas, probably with a midi black coat with a black fur collar. (i bloody love winter, i just got all excited).

P.S. Kate Moss's new Matte lipstick collection is amazing! I'm so in love with this deep red and it lasts as long as the more expensive brands. Thanks Kate you're FAB!

In The Spotlight - Victoria Johnston

In the spotlight this week is 39 year old Victoria Johnston from our Phoenix, Arizona chapter.

Victoria is happily married with a 16 year old daughter and a 13 year old son. Having teenagers in the house makes for lots of excitement, I’m sure!

Victoria works full-time as a Program Manager for a technology based engineering firm, yet still makes time for her hobbies and her favorite charities. She devotes lots of attention to fundraising through the Jr. League of Phoenix which is focused on making a difference in the community. When she isn’t fundraising and working with her charities, Victoria loves taking pictures, candle making, and vintage couture fashion.

Victoria and her husband are currently busy planning a beach getaway  with a group of close friends in celebration of a certain “milestone” birthday. Among the suggested locales for this special event are warm sandy beaches in Florida or perhaps even the Caribbean! I can’t think of a better way to celebrate a milestone than with sand between my toes!

Being a member of the LBDC for 2 years, Victoria said she joined the club to meet some other ladies with similar interests as her own. Women who like going out to places around the Valley for some fun. Victoria said, “What I love most about this awesome group of ladies is that even when life has kept me away from events for a while, they welcome me back to the club each time like I’ve never missed a beat.”

In her job, teaching her kids, and in the charity work that is so important to Victoria, she tries to remember the following mantra from Sandra Day O’Conner:  “Do the best you can in every task, no matter how unimportant it may seem at the time.  No one learns more about a problem, than the person at the bottom.”

Those are great words to live by, Victoria. Thanks for being in our spotlight this week!

Cheers To Breast Cancer Awareness

If you haven’t been following us on Twitter (@lbdclub) or Instagram (lbdclub) this month, you’ve been missing out on our Pink Drink fun to raise awareness during Breast Cancer Month!

We’ve been posting our original Little Black Dress Club cocktail concoctions throughout the month and thought we’d share a final pink toast!. A few of them are the result of a weekend long Directors retreat in Deep Creek Lake, MD. We played mixologist in the kitchen - we stocked up on juices and mixers, cleaned out the liquor cabinets, and had a blast mixing, swirling and sipping!

Here’s a taste of what we created - The Cotton Candy Cocktail, The Flower Berry Bellini and Sparkling Hope are all pink and delicious. We had an interesting time coming up with these and even more fun sipping on them while enjoying a great view of the lake!

Next time you have your girlfriends over for a GNO, pull them into your kitchen and stir up a few of these LBDC cocktails. Use it as a conversation starter to remind your friends to get a mammogram, tell a story about a loved one who battled breast cancer, or just enjoy sipping a yummy cocktail while you appreciate some girl time. Do you have a favorite recipe that you came up with on your own? Share it in the comments below and we will include it in a future LBDC publication!

Cheers!

Deets Of The Week

Just a quick post to show what I wore to a dinner in Central London the other day. This faux fur jacket makes me feel super glamorous (even if I don't look it) and it was originally £75 and I got it for £25! Bargain. I recently got contacted by the absolutely lovely Lydia from Clothes-box to review a few of their items. I chose this dogtooth dress which I am absolutely in love with and a 50s style cardigan which goes amazingly with jeans. I haven't owned a body-con dress for years, so it's definitely a refreshing change to what I normally wear. Clothes-Box is a family run business that has everything from modern to vintage pieces and the best thing is that it's free delivery for the UK! Any company that is run by a family, i admire because I know how much hard work that can be. They're doing unbelievably well already, so you know the Clothes-Box is something to look out for. They are committed to making sure they're continuously improving their environmental performance, which is fantastic. If you haven't heard of them yet, definitely check them out asap.

Dream Wedding Dress Part 1 - Princess Dress

Every girl dreams of it from the moment they first time look at Disney's love story cartoon.. While we grow up dreaming of Cinderella's "happy end" we realize that "happily ever after" & Prince Charming are luxury that usually only cartoon princess can afford in modern world, there's one thing we won't be making compromise of. Our dream wedding dress.

Topic so complex deserves detailed approach and we will try showing all kinds of modern wedding dresses and accessories. To start with most-loved, most popular and everlasting .. Princess Wedding Dress.
Also known as corset dress we prefer name Princess, mostly because all Disney's princess wear similar style and some of the real-life princesses wore it on their special day. A dress that sits in our subconscious since we got our Barbie doll  and watched Lady D's wedding, a first thing you imagine when someone mentions "wedding dress". You might not wear it on your wedding day, but can you say you wouldn't want at least to try it? :)

Start from choosing corset shape and style. Sleeveless or not, crystallized or simple, until your hips or short it should point out your attributes.

Jennifer Stano's dress

Celebrity picks: from iconic Kim Kardashian's  & Victoria Beckham's wedding dresses designed both by Vera Wang to Salma Hayek's extraordinary Balenciaga

We all know Carrie's  Vivienne Westwood

Niki Lozanova

For those girls who don't see themselves in snow-white , opt for colorful pastel dress

At last, version of Pricess dress that's a bit for more elegant look and is perfect for taller and skinnier girls

Pros
  • You will actually feel and look like fairytale princess for at least one day of your life
  • Perfect to hide baby bump so you don't have to answer same question 1000 times on your W-day
  • Make you feel relaxed about any possible body imperfection and you won't have to keep your belly inside or similar as corset will squeeze it to perfection :)

Cons
  • You will need a very big limo to fit in in case your party & ceremony aren't in same place
  • ...and a help all the time
  • It will be very difficult to dance (and move) in so think about having another one for w-party
