Traveling light: Fashion tips and how to pack

Summer vacation season has finally arrived and with it, the decisions on what to take with you as you're off enjoying some relaxing time in the sun.

Often, there is not enough space to take all the clothes you think you might need, whether there's no room in your cramped car trunk or you're trying to save money on luggage fees at the airport.

But have no fear. Shannon Schroeder, a Tulsa fashion expert, has some advice on traveling light yet always having something appropriate to wear. The key: versatile pieces that can be re-worn and fashioned into several looks.

"Try to stick with basics," Schroeder said.

For most of your clothing items, choose neutral colors. Black, white and khaki are good colors for staple items, and flashes of color can be brought in with shoes, purses and accessories.

"You could transform any outfit with accessories," Schroeder said.

Schroeder also suggests using beauty products to make your look pop. A manicure and pedicure, or bright lipstick, will add needed color for what could otherwise be a dull look.

And she says although most of your wardrobe should be basics, you can allow yourself a few standout pieces, such as a colored blouse or colored pair of jeans, which are "very in" right now.

The following are some versatile items that Schroeder recommends.

Dresses

"One of my favorite pieces to wear is a maxi dress," Schroeder said.

For a daytime look, add a fedora and flip-flops. To dress it up, slip on a nice pair of sandals and some accessories.

The same dress can also double as a coverup, she said.

All the same tips can apply to a simple white dress, Schroeder said.

Tops

A black tank top is essential. It can be worn with a pair of colored statement jeans or layered under a blouse.

And speaking of blouses, Schroeder recommends a long-sleeve or three-quarter sleeve one, preferably in a trendy print.

"If you do a blouse in a sheer fabric, it will be cool enough for summer," she said.

And it can be paired with shorts, jeans or a skirt.

Bags

When it comes to bags, you'll probably need only a couple, Schroeder said. A small clutch to dress up an outfit, and a bigger, crossover bag for daytime and when you have more things to carry around.

Shoes

As for shoes, only take one in each "category," Schroeder said.

Her recommendations include a flip-flop in a bold color, metallic sandals, beaded flip-flops, and a wedge espadrille.

Her final tip: Leave the stilettos at home.

"Summer is the time to give your feet a break. A sandal or wedges will still give you the height and the glamour without the spiked heel."

Spring Up and Stand Out! Bohemian Style Tips

Spring is here! Hooray!

Everything shifts when we enter this amazing season as plants start blooming and bright colors begin to surround us. It's also a time when we shed our old layers to come out of hibernation as people usually want to rock a new hairdo or wardrobe. I know that I like to mix up my bohemian look the moment the bright sun breaks through the dreary winter clouds.

What is bohemian to me, you ask? No, it's not about being a hippie with baggy clothing - it's about being unconventional. Bohemian style is centered on freedom and breaking fashion rules. Here are a few styling tips that will add pizazz to any wardrobe so that you can SPRING up and STAND out!


1. Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize!

I think accessories are one of the easiest things to add to your wardrobe without leaving your comfort zone. You can make any outfit smashing just by adding statement earrings or shoes. I always recommend vintage pieces as accessories because these items are usually one of a kind. Spice up a collared shirt with a 70s inspired bow or deck it out with a mix of necklaces or your favorite scarf. Whichever vintage accessory you choose, when you wear it - BAM! you are already an individual.

A great tip to recycle single earrings that you might have laying around is to try pairing it with a different earring, but one that will compliment it. (Guys you can do this, too!) Just because an earring doesn't have a matching partner doesn't mean you should throw them away. Imagine if they did that to people. Ai goo!


2. Vest are the best!

If you think your ensemble is boring and you want to spunk it up, the addition of a vest can be the best. It adds another layer of style and warmth and as you know, we need layers with the unpredictable weather of the Bay. A great way to mix up the traditional vest is to make your own. I'm a big fan of cutting things up, so try cutting off the sleeves of old jackets or shirts to create something new.

If DIY is not your thing, try sporting an eclectic vest to transform a dress you already love or wear one to break up a basic shirt and pants combination.



3. Put a belt on it!

I put a belt on everything! If you think there is something missing from your outfit, it doesn't hurt to try putting a belt on it. Belts come in all different colors and textures and range from wide to skinny pencil belts. Try living on the wild side and trade your brown or black belt for a red or white one. Switch it up!

Putting a belt on it also works well for plus size women if you wear them high waisted. If a belt doesn't fit you around the waist just pull it up a little to make it high waisted!


4. Mix patterns like it is no ones business!

Combine your patterns like you are a kid dressing themselves for the first time. Kids are fearless and they do things because it feels good. For example, wear a polk a dot top with striped bottoms or plaid with paisley - there are no boundaries. Play dress up with yourself or friends and come up with different combinations. Don't be afraid because you never know what masterpiece you will create.

If you ever think,"oh no this is too much!" its probably not too much, just rock it! You might inspire someone else to take a risk.

5. A punch of color goes a long way!

Always think color when getting dressed. Does your outfit feel "womp-womp" or monotone? Then add some color. Wear that wildcard. Put on that summer dress and add colorful tights to keep yourself warm. Do you have an office job and think that you have to wear as much black and blue to stay professional? No way! Color is allowed. Make yourself happy at work and add color to your slacks, button ups and blazers. This is also a great way to introduce accessories into your outfit as you can brighten up what you're wearing with buttons, broaches, ties or necklaces that pop!

There is never a wrong way to interpret bohemian. Think back to styles you loved in the past and revisit them. What makes you feel free? Never think that you can't try new things and trends as you may start your own fashion revolution. The main idea, is that what ever your style is, it's dope and it makes you an individual. Remember, you only live once but you have to dress everyday.

Turning up the heat: what not to wear

With summer-like heat coming, don’t lose your head or fashion sense

The rumor is the thermometer will hit the mid-80’s today and a few days this week! Yipppeeeee!

I am more than ready to ditch my heavy jacket and leave my boots permanently in the closet!

The initial tease of summer brings radiant sunshine, brilliant blue skies and glorious temperatures; BUT, there is a dark side to the celebration…

THE DREADED “TOO MUCH TOO SOON” FASHION EXPOSURE PROBLEM!

Let’s prevent it this year, OK?

Here are my tips: (I’m really digging the list making thing…have you noticed?)

• Capri pants are NEVER OK. NEVER. Well, let me re-phrase. If you are 5 years and under, capri away! HOWEVER, for the rest of us, it means a big, fat NO. The acceptable exception to the capri is the CROP pant (hits close to the ankle). VERY different. How? Think of your knee-cap to mid-shin as the danger zone. Pants should NOT stop at either point, otherwise, you look squat…and, last time I checked, “squat” doesn’t mean “hot.”
• Short-shorts. Really? Who can take you seriously in that get-up? NO ONE, that’s who. Plus, if you are anything like me, you are so pale you resemble those hideous translucent fish who live in the bottom of the ocean. And, no one wants to see that in April.
• Bermuda Shorts = Mom jeans. Don’t do it. If you do not feel comfortable in a short with a five-inch inseam, your best bet is a skirt or sundress. Bermuda shorts remind me of carpenter jeans (ewww!) Plus, you’re in Unionville, not on safari. Get over it.
• Ankle bracelets. Why do women feel the need to adorn their ankles when the weather gets warm? I’m going to go out on a limb and say that there is no such thing as a “classy” ankle bracelet. For those of you out there who beg to differ, please, send me an example.
• Too-tight white jeans. OUCH. This is so very, painfully unflattering. My suggestion when it comes to white jeans is to buy them a size up and always (ALWAYS) pair them with nude undergarments.
• Crogs - Just dont!

Upon review, I find it amusing that most men would probably beg to differ with my list. In fact, I’m pretty sure that if you walk down State Street in too-tight white short-shorts with an ankle bracelet and exposed belly button piercing, you’ll get a cat call (or two).

As office culture varies, so do dress codes

Angi Pauley demonstrates what not to wear to a job interview Feb. 15 during Columbia College’s Dress for Success Business Etiquette Dinner and Fashion Show.

Do an image search for career wear, and you'll likely find pictures showing staid gray suits, collared shirts and conservative heels. But step into a number of businesses, and that's not necessarily what you'll see.

Several social forces contribute to a company's culture, and it's this culture that is reflected through what employees wear.

During a business etiquette dinner in February at Columbia College, soon-to-be graduates were given a crash course in interview attire with a fashion show.

Reyhan Jamerson, coordinator of employment services for career services, said the show was designed to show examples of getting it right as well as wrong.

Student models donned examples of business-professional and business-casual attire, and two staff members played the role of bad examples.

For women's business professional, the student model wore a black suit with straight-legged pants, a collared shirt, a pair of matte leather, low-heeled pumps and a strand of pearls.

The business-casual look included an ivory jacket with matching wide-legged pants, a ruffled top and a pair of bone colored, close-toed pumps.

The bad examples included the obvious — too tight, too short, too low — as well as the oft-overlooked. For example, name tags should be worn on the right because when someone shakes your hand their eye travels up your arm to where the tag should be, Jamerson said.

Still, the do's and don'ts aren't set in stone.

"It's all about the company culture, too. It's going to vary in different areas," Jamerson said.

That company culture is dictated by a number of factors, said Tina Marks, an assistant professor at the Stephens College School of Design & Fashion.

Region affects dress codes, both in terms of culture and climate. What flies in Los Angeles might not work in New York City, both because of social mores and weather patterns, Marks said.

Additionally, the type of work that goes on has an effect on dress code. Marks brings up one Stephens alum, now a technical designer at Abercrombie & Fitch, who described her workday uniform as ripped jeans and flip-flops. She didn't dress quite like this for her interview; however, had she shown up for a job interview in a suit, she likely wouldn't have gotten the job, Marks said.

Even if that won't fly in most offices, the trend in general is still a move away from the concept of power dressing, Marks said.

During the 1980s, women dressed similarly to men: navy suits in boxy cuts and blouses with high necklines, which often featured some sort of tie. Marks said this sartorial shadowing reflected a greater sense of trying to achieve as much as a man.

The casual-Friday phenomenon of the '90s took away some of the emphasis on suiting for both men and women, Marks said, and today the fast pace of fashion in general has an effect on what we see in offices.

"You can see something an hour after it was on the runway just by turning on the computer. Trends are seen much more quickly, and the fashion cycle moves more quickly. We are almost bombarded with so many possibilities that there isn't one specific style that prevails," Marks said. "You can pretty much pull off a version of any style you want, as long as it is appropriate for your workplace."

For the most part, the general rule is to avoid anything cut too tight, too high or too low.

"Do you feel like you are being a professional, or are you always distracted by having to adjust something? That's really the main thing," Marks said.

Those are the main parameters in her career, sportswear and dresses class, in which students design and construct an office-appropriate dress as well as a jacket with coordinating pant or skirt.

Before they construct the garments, students must research trends in career wear. This year, Marks had each student select a woman from the Forbes 100 Most Powerful Women list and pull together a presentation showing 20 images of this woman. The student then created a line inspired by this woman's style of dressing.

Marks said her goal was for students to have a feel for what successful women in their 40s and 50s wear to work instead of designing what they might like to wear themselves.

Results varied.

"Andrea Jung," formerly "of Avon, could look softer than Diane Sawyer," Marks said.

And one standout had a penchant for arm-bearing tops and leather skirts.

"For the entertainment industry in L.A., that might be fine," Marks said. "But she would still wear something more conservative to a meeting of the board."

That isn't to say anything goes in every instance.

"Financial and legal" industries "are more conservative. Even if it isn't stated" in a written dress code, "it's understood. You really don't want to draw attention to yourself. People need to feel comfortable working with you and not be distracted by anything else," Marks said.

Barbie Weaver, retail manager at First State Community Bank, said her office follows a strict, written dress code for this very reason.

"We're a lot more conservative than a lot of the local banks," Weaver said.

For women, this means no bare shoulders or low-cut blouses at any time. Hosiery is required. Tattoos and body piercings cannot be visible, though Weaver said women are allowed up to three piercings in each ear — a small departure that nonetheless probably wouldn't be allowed in another time and place.

Although some might consider such a detailed dress code to be limiting, Weaver said she finds adhering to them makes her more confident in her work.

"No matter what happens during the business day, I am dressed to face it," she said.

Spring Style Tips from Stylist Lindsi Lane

Ford Artists personal stylist, Lindsi Lane, began her career as the youngest personal stylist ever at Barneys New York and has worked her way up to being one of the city's most sought-after stylists. We spoke to her about her Spring 2012 must-haves, her go-to designers, up-and-comers to watch, and more.



The Fashion Spot: You must have worked with some interesting people as a stylist at Barneys. Can you tell us about any particularly memorable clients?

Lindsi Lane: Working for Barneys New York was such an amazing experience! I once shopped withLauren Hutton, which was such an awesome day! To work with such an American icon who has been in the industry forever was really cool for me.

tFS: Do you have any go-to designers?

LL: It always depends on the situation or who I am styling, but personally I love Alexander Wang, Isabel Marant, Phillip Lim, Matthew Williamson, Marchesa, Rick Owens…I mean, the list is endless!

tFS: Any up-and-comers we should have our eye out for?

LL: Two designers right now that are on my radar are Nonoo and Cushnie et Ochs. Both completely different designers, Nonoo has that super cool “day into night” look and Cushnie et Ochs’ pieces are just so insanely sexy! Serious showstoppers!

tFS: What are some timeless essentials that will never go out of style?

LL: I actually get asked this question a lot. Every girl should absolutely have:
A classic black/nude pump. I love the Christian Louboutin “Decolette” pump.
A cool leather jacket. A personal obsession is Rick Owens (although a steep investment, I promise you will never have to buy another leather jacket ever again!)
A timeless bag that you can wear year round. Purchasing one in a color that complements your wardrobe is ideal.

tFS: What were some of your favorite Spring 2012 shows?

LL: Each season, I attend the Dennis Basso fashion show and this season I was fawning over everything. He incorporated the most amazing neon orange furs that I just couldn’t stop gushing over! I also loved the color palette at Phillip Lim and I literally want every piece from Isabel Marant’s Spring collection; so genius!

tFS: How can one pull off the athletic trend in a chic way?

LL: This is a fun trend! I would balance out the casualness of the trend with more formal pieces such as sequins or crystals. That way, it will be a look you can take to the streets without literally looking like you are on your way to the gym.

tFS: Neutrals are big for Spring, how do you suggest giving them some spice for a memorable look?

LL: It is easy for a head-to-toe neutral look to look drab and dry so I suggest adding a chunky, fun crystal necklace or accessory of your choice and/or an amazing neon colored pump. You will look so chic and on trend for the season.

tFS: Thoughts on print-on-print?

LL: Any excuse to have fun with color and prints are on my checklist! However, it is trial and error when it comes to mixing prints. Experiment with some items in your closet to find which prints look best together. Usually, I find that it is the ones that you would least expect to work together that DO work, so have fun with it. Fashion should be fun!

tFS: What Spring 2012 items are worth investing in? Which do you see being particularly fleeting?

LL: I think that investing in a colorful neon handbag or shoe is something that can perk up anyone’s wardrobe, especially in the summertime. This isn’t even necessarily a “trend” since having color in your wardrobe is a MUST. This will take you much further than just this season. What trend I think is particularly fleeting would be the athletic one. Although fun and cool, I don’t believe we will be seeing this every season to come. Also, this trend is not for everyone, as having color in your wardrobe is.

tFS: One Spring 2012 item you're dying to splurge on?

LL: Oh, come on, it is hard to name just one! I will name a few on my dream wish list: an ivory/oatmeal colored Rick Owens leather jacket, Nicholas Kirkwood printed sandals, and a bright Celinepython clutch.

"Into the blue" Look

As we previously wrote, electric blue is one of the "it" colors this season. I feel great wearing accessories in this color (Marella Bag & Zara shoes) and entire look in "blue variations". Preferring lady-like style my Romwe trench-coat was a perfect Spring-refreshment together with HQ Market blouse...all in blue :) 

Although Total-Look is very in, I prefer opening it with some vivid color nails and 1 item in neutral color. For daily outfit, white trousers seemed like a good solution. 

Wish you could see my Marella leather bag crystals sparkling on artificial light. Bling Bling :) One of my favorites and its simply  catching eyes of everyone who see it. Zara shoes are perfectly comfortable with not-so-high heel for long spring days out.

Totally loving my romantic HQ Market blouse in pastel blue prints. Ideal for daily wear, but as the upper part is  not see-through it can go well under blazer for faculty and some business-style for those of you who are working.

How to wear it: First of all, you should balance the naked back with simplified, covered-up front. Forget about necklaces and big earrings; backless dress itself isn't very versatile, so you have to choose wisely. 

For a day in the city wear your backless dress with simple shoes and a small purse, it would be advisable to pick a purse with some embellishment, that will compensate for the lack of jewelry . The best colors for a day look are black, nude and white, but you can also pick a floral print for a romantic look.
