Young designers, new trends on runway

The fashion wares of aspiring college designers will be displayed alongside the likes of VanJean, Britton’s, M Boutique and Bohemian when the University of South Carolina’s USC Fashion Week kicks off Monday for four days on campus.

Now in its fourth year, the week will showcase young designers whose works will be featured during two nights of fashion shows as well as a charity benefit and symposium.

“Students are able to show a fresher and clearer perspective on style and fashion because college is a place where free thinking and individuality are encouraged,” said Melissa Karl, president of the USC Fashion Board, which is hosting the event.

And organizers are promising that guests searching for anything from a black dress style to a stunning piece of jewelry will find them among the new collections that will be on display this week.

“These shows, especially our Student Designer Competition and Sponsor Show, will showcase new spring styles and trends and display the views of students as to how they think and see fashion,” Karl said.

At the heart of those shows will be the works of the student designers, who all have been provided models, makeup and hair stylists to present their creations to potential buyers, shop owners and potential customers.

USC junior retail major Matthew Teague is among the week’s featured designers.

Teague, who is studying fashion merchandising, recalls first making “doll clothes” for his grandmother’s vintage clothespins on her turn-of-the-century Singer treadle sewing machine when he was 6.

“A few years later, I remember creating elaborate creations out of blankets, towels, and safety pins,” he said. “I never thought that those Depression-era clothespins and awkward, floppy blankets would actually segue into what would be my major at 19, and a full-time obsession at 21.”

Teague’s featured works include clothing items and several jewelry pieces. He said he’s excited to see the diversity of offerings in this year’s show.

“A few years ago, we saw repurposed shower curtains and bedsheets reminiscent of Columbia’s Runaway Runway and last fall we saw taffeta and feather cocktail dresses from Carol Copeland and tulle skirts from Lilly Greenhalgh,” he said. “What are the newest ideas? That’s what I’m so excited to find out.”

And he’s hoping the show will have a favorable impact on the college community.

“I feel like we are rather out of tune with fashion. And it’s a sad thing really. I may not always dress as I do for a fashion show or a job interview, but I always try to look presentable and approachable,” he said. “I wish that more students would evaluate their dress and take more pride in themselves. We’re at one of the best schools in America. I want us to look like it.”

Karl, however, doesn’t think that fashion is lost on the average student.

“I think that every student is tuned in to fashion in their own way,” she said. “Whether they are a big fan of the preppy look or are more into new-age grunge, everyone has their own

Spring Style Tips from Stylist Lindsi Lane

Ford Artists personal stylist, Lindsi Lane, began her career as the youngest personal stylist ever at Barneys New York and has worked her way up to being one of the city's most sought-after stylists. We spoke to her about her Spring 2012 must-haves, her go-to designers, up-and-comers to watch, and more.

The Fashion Spot: You must have worked with some interesting people as a stylist at Barneys. Can you tell us about any particularly memorable clients?

Lindsi Lane: Working for Barneys New York was such an amazing experience! I once shopped withLauren Hutton, which was such an awesome day! To work with such an American icon who has been in the industry forever was really cool for me.

tFS: Do you have any go-to designers?

LL: It always depends on the situation or who I am styling, but personally I love Alexander Wang, Isabel Marant, Phillip Lim, Matthew Williamson, Marchesa, Rick Owens…I mean, the list is endless!

tFS: Any up-and-comers we should have our eye out for?

LL: Two designers right now that are on my radar are Nonoo and Cushnie et Ochs. Both completely different designers, Nonoo has that super cool “day into night” look and Cushnie et Ochs’ pieces are just so insanely sexy! Serious showstoppers!

tFS: What are some timeless essentials that will never go out of style?

LL: I actually get asked this question a lot. Every girl should absolutely have:
A classic black/nude pump. I love the Christian Louboutin “Decolette” pump.
A cool leather jacket. A personal obsession is Rick Owens (although a steep investment, I promise you will never have to buy another leather jacket ever again!)
A timeless bag that you can wear year round. Purchasing one in a color that complements your wardrobe is ideal.

tFS: What were some of your favorite Spring 2012 shows?

LL: Each season, I attend the Dennis Basso fashion show and this season I was fawning over everything. He incorporated the most amazing neon orange furs that I just couldn’t stop gushing over! I also loved the color palette at Phillip Lim and I literally want every piece from Isabel Marant’s Spring collection; so genius!

tFS: How can one pull off the athletic trend in a chic way?

LL: This is a fun trend! I would balance out the casualness of the trend with more formal pieces such as sequins or crystals. That way, it will be a look you can take to the streets without literally looking like you are on your way to the gym.

tFS: Neutrals are big for Spring, how do you suggest giving them some spice for a memorable look?

LL: It is easy for a head-to-toe neutral look to look drab and dry so I suggest adding a chunky, fun crystal necklace or accessory of your choice and/or an amazing neon colored pump. You will look so chic and on trend for the season.

tFS: Thoughts on print-on-print?

LL: Any excuse to have fun with color and prints are on my checklist! However, it is trial and error when it comes to mixing prints. Experiment with some items in your closet to find which prints look best together. Usually, I find that it is the ones that you would least expect to work together that DO work, so have fun with it. Fashion should be fun!

tFS: What Spring 2012 items are worth investing in? Which do you see being particularly fleeting?

LL: I think that investing in a colorful neon handbag or shoe is something that can perk up anyone’s wardrobe, especially in the summertime. This isn’t even necessarily a “trend” since having color in your wardrobe is a MUST. This will take you much further than just this season. What trend I think is particularly fleeting would be the athletic one. Although fun and cool, I don’t believe we will be seeing this every season to come. Also, this trend is not for everyone, as having color in your wardrobe is.

tFS: One Spring 2012 item you're dying to splurge on?

LL: Oh, come on, it is hard to name just one! I will name a few on my dream wish list: an ivory/oatmeal colored Rick Owens leather jacket, Nicholas Kirkwood printed sandals, and a bright Celinepython clutch.

A hat fit for Icarus

When I'm looking to buy a hat top of my list of requirements is that by wearing it I could potentially blind someone close by. Luckily for me, Maria Francesca Pepe has designed a piece of headwear perfect for that very cause.

Although I am perplexed about the wearability factor of that particular piece, the rest of Pepe's collection is simple yet effective. I like clean lines, I like block colours and I like clothing with shape. This collection has all three. Inspiration is supposed to have come from 19th century French prostitutes, but I'm sure there must have been more ruffles involved back then. The seductive fabrics are due to Pepe's Italian roots, which is lucky really since the velvets and silks stop the cuts from being overly harsh.

I'm not so sure about the lilac lipstick - it's a bit Peaches Geldof for my liking - but the combination of the simple dress and geometric brooch makes for an interesting outfit. Effortlessly cool rather than being too showy.

This season is all about the shoulder, dahling. There's still a part of me that screams "Dynasty" everytime I see a shoulder pad, but as I personally am lacking in the shoulder-department I do feel myself drawn to the sillouette - just so long as big hair and dream sequences aren't coming back too!

C for Ciara...

Fancy Pants

The tuxedo is the smart way to dress up - and hide those knobbly knees, says Hilary Alexander.
Jacket, £715, Moschino Cheap & Chic; trousers, £455, Dries Van Noten. Silk camisole, £32.50, Biba, £32.50. Photo: JONATHAN GLYNN-SMITH
Tuxedos in pictures

Knobbly, wobbly, or cobbled together with the scars of a hundred childhood bike-rides which ended in disaster (as are mine), they are one of the least attractive parts of the body, unless, of course, you happen to have a pair of perfect patellas, such as those which intersect the enviable pins of the Duchess of Cambridge.

"Coco" Chanel, wasn't fond of knees; she looked upon them with distaste, decreed 'the perfect skirt' would always cover the bony abominations, and was the first women to wear trousers in public. (Karl Lagerfeld, incidentally, in his haute couture collection for Chanel, earlier this month, paid homage to the legacy by insisting all his models wore over-the-knee boots in satin or leather, veiled in chiffon and tulle).

The tux is about style, not fashion

All great news for women with a mild form of 'genuphobia', since trousers have emerged as the heroes of the new-modern wardrobe.

Wide or second-skin skinny, flared or fitted, cropped or over-the-ankle, trousers are the ultimate anti-knee champions, flattering and fashionable, and, not to mention, way more functional and practical than a maxi-skirt.

Their return to the frontline of the fashionscape, has prompted a re-think of the working wardrobe, as well as a revival in the way we address trousers for evening.

The 'tuxedo', a la Yves Saint Laurent's 1966 'le smoking', has, of course, long been one of the usual suspects on the party circuit and red carpet, favoured by every celebrity from Bianca Jagger, Julie Andrews and Catherine Deneuve, to Naomi Watts, Mary-Kate Olsen and Eva Mendes, and has remained impervious even to the nonsensical ban imposed by the dress code-dinosaurs at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

But tuxedo-dressing has been given an update by way of the 1970's revival in general, Tom Ford's glam take on the tux, and Marc Jacobs' fascination with one of his "fave" inspirations, YSL.

Jacobs, unlike Ford, eschewed the classic black, in favour of satin 'le smokings' in the mouthwatering colours of a Ladurée macaroon.

Designers as diverse as Donna Karan, Ashish, Balmain, and Dries Van Noten have merged the Saint Laurent look with glam-rock, via glitzy DJ-jackets and/or trousers which, far from being relics of 'the decade taste forgot', have a new lease of life because of loose-cut, 'boyfriend' tailoring. And bargain-hunters will find luxe labels like these a little more purse-friendly in the July sales.

Create your own DIY tuxedo-style by putting a bling-bling jacket with plain black trousers or jeans, or vice versa, a tailored jacket with Dorothy Perkins' sequined strides, (as photographed); Markus Lupfer's gold, sequined stretch trousers, down from £350 to £175, at theoutnet.com; or the Moto bronze foil, snakeprint jeans, £60, at Topshop.

Then, put on the glam-rock 'n' roll Ritz with Alber Elbaz's favourite tux-cessory - a floppy bow-tie.
