Do’s and Don’ts of Music Festival Fashion

Music Festival Season has officially begun. But aside from the awesome line-ups, these festivals have become the ultimate destination for Woodstock inspired fashion. So let your inner hippie run wild with our list of Do’s and Don’ts for Music Festival Fashion.

DO frolic in a dress

It’s all about the flowy sundress on the summer music scene. With maxi dresses hitting big again this season, you’re sure to turn heads in your long, neon dress. If shorter alternatives are more your style, t-shirt and tank dresses are perfect for hot, crowded days.

DO pack your cut-off denim shorts

It seems that this summer, the more cut up your shorts are, the better. While you can purchase a pair of cut-off denims anywhere, the best part of this look is that you can personalize it. Take a pair of old jeans and get to cutting. Adding some holes and patches make the look stand out even more.

DO wear a hat

A hat is a must if you’re planning on spending the day in the sun. Big floppy hats are the way to go if you’re trying to protect your face, but if you’re going for a more fashionable look, a fedora is your best bet.

DON’T get caught with a head dress

Feathers might be a major trend right now, but feather head dresses are not. Vanessa Hudgens made that mistake this weekend at Coachella. If you are trying to channel your inner Indian, try fringes and feather earrings.

DON’T unleash your inner ‘Hammer’

MC Hammer must be more influential than I thought because I’ve been seeing elaborately patterned pants everywhere. The bright, psychedelic patterns might fit the hippie trend, but I for one am not a fan. However, if you find yourself in need of an 80s flashback, at least use subtle colors.

DON’T let a flower overpower your head

With hippie fashion comes flower power. That’s easy to see. However, your don’t want to let the flowers have all the power. If you’re looking for a floral look, try a headband or even a smaller flower. If the flower is too big, it will take away from the rest of your outfit.

Though summer music festivals seem to be an excuse for people to wear as little clothing as possible, keep in mind that you should still bring a sense of style.

What to wear at a festival

We’ve booked our tickets (after two hours, numerous website crashes and three hissy fits), sorted our travel and unpacked the tent, so now all we need to know is what to wear at a festival. And that’s the fun bit!
Yeah, yeah, so there are a few months to go yet, but it never hurts to be prepared. That’s why we’ve put together a guide to your festival wardrobe, whether you’re heading to Creamfields or V. Take a look…
summer festival clothing
Wear for: Leeds and Reading Festival

To see: Foo Fighters, Florence and The Machine, Kasabian

If you’re heading to an indie festival this summer, a cool and casual outfit will ensure you fit right in among all those laidback muso types. A pair of ripped denim shorts, baggy vest and straw hat are all you need to get the look.

Festival Fashion Tip: Keep your feet sweet! Muddy fields are no place for flip flop – protect your toes with these cute and quirky hi top trainers.
Wear for: Creamfields
To see: David Guetta, Example, Deadmau5
Give us a killer baseline and some neon facepaint – we’re ready to dance! If you’re at a dance or rave festival this summer, you need some neon – go for a colour clash with oranges and pinks… and don’t forget the statement shades!
Festival Fashion Tip: A lightweight cotton hoody like this one from White Label will keep you warm when the sun goes down. And it comes in loads of colours too – bonus!
Wear for: Wireless Festival
To see: Drake, Jessie J, Rihanna
We know it’s not particularly ‘cool’, but we LOVE pop festivals. All that fun music requires a fun outfit, and this printed playsuit is perfect. Team with these navy plimsolls for dry days, but take your wellies just in case…
Festival Fashion Tip: Wear your cross-body bag on your front so you can see your valuables at all times – you wouldn’t want to lose your camera before the headliner comes on!
Are you going to a festival this summer? What will you be wearing?
